It's the most wonderful time of the year: awards season! But it's been quite a strange year for films (disregarding the complete firestorm that has hit Hollywood in the recent months). Have there been any really great films this year? No, not really. There have been some shining gems, like the technically triumphant Dunkirk, the quietly fierce Call Me by Your Name, the socially riveting Get Out, and, my particular favorite, the wonderfully poignant Lady Bird. But others have just been average. I will admit, I was quite nervous for this awards season, for fear there wouldn't be any films to nominate and we would be stuck with just those junky Marvel movie and Bossy Baby. But, alas, we were saved by some quality films just in time. Overall, I think this year's batch of Oscar contenders is... Okay... Leaving my excitement for 2018's most glamorous night of the year a little lackluster.
Nonetheless, there weren't really any surprises in regards to this years nomination. The biggest shock was Christopher Plummer's nod for All the Money in the World, a role he prepared for and filmed in less than a month. Although the nominations list is lacking British films (perhaps that is because Britain was lacking in films this year), the 75th Golden Globes did bring the love for British actors - every performance category featured multiple Brits, which makes me extremely pleased. The television category was pretty predictable following the Emmy Awards back in September. (As a side note, I binged watched Big Little Lies on my recent flight to London and fell madly in love! A What I'm Watching is coming soon.) I am interested to see how the HFP chooses this year; it could go blockbuster with Dunkirk or The Post or it could go indie with Call Me by Your Name or Get Out. I'm hoping for the latter.
Here are my picks for the 75th Golden Globe Awards.
