I'm not going to lie, the only reason I began watching Fargo was because of Martin Freeman. I absolutely love Freeman, and think he is a fantastic actor. So, to see him on American television was quite a treat. Not only did Freeman kill it as the manipulative and corrupt Lester Nygaard, but the rest of the cast did a superb job of bring all the show’s characters to life. Billy Bob Thornton was fantastic as the cold killer Lorne Malvo, and Allison Tolman brought toughness and intelligence to the show’s main female.
Like the Coen brother’s original film, the characters in Fargo take the main stage. Without these dynamic and flawed characters, the story would be just another crime drama. I mean, it’s not very often that you are rooting for the killer husband to get away, and the police to leave the murderer alone.
Also taking leads from the Coen brothers, Fargo had some absolutely gorgeous directing. Lingering scenery, crisp atmospheric tone, and suspenseful drama are praises for this shows fantastic direction. You never truly know what will happen next. The uncertainty and ambiguity of some shots keep the viewer on the edge of their seats constantly.
