It's no secret that I love British films, thus the BAFTAs are my favorite awards show. After the Globes nominations, it's rare to see any nominations veer away from the already nominated films. After the Globes this past weekend, some of the categories already seem to have a predictable winner, so it will be interesting to see if the British Academy will stray from the fold. This year is truly no different, but there have been some exciting and interesting additions to the nominations list.
Firstly, one of my favorite films Lady Macbeth was recognized in three categories, including Outstanding British Film. I have a personal affinity for this film and I want nothing more than for it to succeed! Another exciting addition to the nominee's list was Paddington 2. Again, I have a personal love-affair with this film because of a) it's Paddington Bear and who the heck doesn't love Paddington and b) it's Ben Whishaw as Paddington - obviously, I'm obsessed. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Blade Runner 2049 receive some noms - despite the gender criticism of the film and its poor performance in the box office, I still believe this film is a magical piece of film artistry, so I'm glad to see it being recognized.
The BAFTAs are getting a new face this year. This is the first time in 12 years Stephen Fry will not be hosting the BAFTAs. Instead, the beyond fabulous Joanna Lumley will be bringing a new spirit to show. Her energy and sense of humor will be an exciting change from Fry. I am excited to see how Lumley reinvents Britain's biggest award show.
